National Marine Conservation Area (NMCA)

On October 25, 2007 Canada and Ontario signed a Memorandum of Agreement respecting the establishment of a National Marine Conservation Area in Lake Superior. The Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area extends from Thunder Cape to Bottle Point and includes the lakebed, its overlying waters and wetlands, river estuaries, islands and coast. The NMCA Agreement contained a number of prerequisites that required resolution by both Ontario and Canada before the legal transfer of the NMCA lands could occur. One prerequisite was the consideration of park management plan amendments using public consultation regarding the potential transfer of park lands to become part of the NMCA. Ontario Parks and Parks Canada are working together to address the land use amendments and transfer of lands to the federal Crown. The web link posted here will take you to the Parks Canada Lake Superior NMCA website.
