Natural Features

In North America, the last glaciers went into retreat about 18,000 years ago, a period known as the Wisconsin Age. Around that time, in the Lake of the Woods area, meltwaters of ancient Lake Agassiz laid down sediments and a raised shoreline that now stand high and dry. Remarkably well preserved, some sediment and a section of the old shoreline are easily visible in Cranberry Lake Nature Reserve. Cranberry Lake also has samples of the bogs, swamps, and peatland characteristic of the region.
