Bass Lake's sand beach is a relic of a former bay along the shoreline of ancient Lake Algonquin; the main road of the campground runs along the former shoreline. The open fields, southern forests and wetlands of the park attract deer and many small mammals, as well as loons, herons, woodpeckers, and about 124 other bird species.
